Flynn and Natalie demonstrate their different strategies for composing fiddle music in different traditional styles; the group will then compose a tune together! Melodic instruments welcome.

Acoustic guitar, mandolin player, and singer Flynn Cohen tours with his award-winning folk band Low Lily and is a long-time sideman to Irish button accordion legend John Whelan. His 2023 US tour features duo performances of original and traditional instrumentals from multiple fiddle music traditions as well as original, traditional, and contemporary folk songs. His guitar playing is influenced by a wide range of flatpicking, strumming, and fingerpicking styles and his mandolin work is inspired by bluegrass, old time, Irish, and classical playing.  -

Natalie Padilla initially studied Texas-Style fiddle under the tutelage of her mother, award-winning fiddler Nancy Padilla, and began winning contests on her own at the age of 6. She was named Montana State Pee Wee Fiddle Champion and soon went on to become National Small Fry Fiddle Champion at the National Old Time Fiddler’s Contest (1994), National Young Adult Fiddle Champion (2015), National Twin Fiddling Champion (2015), Rocky Mountain Regional Grand Champion (2015), RockyGrass Fiddle Champion (2015), and is the current Kentucky State Fiddle champion (2022)! As an adjunct fiddle professor at the University of Northern Colorado since 2017, she teaches and leads ensembles in the Folk & Bluegrass program alongside revered local Colorado talents Eric Thorin, Martin Gilmore, and Ron Lynam.
